ROLE: EVENT LEAD + EXHIBIT CO - ORDINATOR + LEAD DESIGNER

PERIOD: MARCH 2013 - PRESENT

LOCATION: VANCOUVER, CANADA

A Journey Into Islam (AJII) is an initiative undertaken by the youth of the Az - Zahraa Islamic Centre, located on the "Highway to Heaven" (Richmond B.C). Every year, the centre opens its doors to the general public. Members of the general public and guests of the centre's members are treated to an event starting with a delectable ethnic dinner, interactive exhibits, and guided tours of the beautiful centre. Typically, due to legal requirements, the event has welcomed 300 - 350 attendees per year.

The goals of the event is to raise awareness about Islam, its beliefs and practices; clear misconceptions about the faith and build relationships with members of other faiths and members of the general public who are curious to learn about Islam through an inviting atmosphere of learning and dialogue; provide a great opportunity for the community's youth as organizers of the event, volunteers or exhibitors and allow them to build and develop valuable, transferable leadership and personal skills.

As the lead event and exhibit designer, my role included working with the centre's religious head to develop and modify content outlines for 9 - 11  exhibits; working with each exhibit team to build and develop content and its materials through thorough research and documentation, visual aids and giveaways; attending all meetings with the exhibitors and the centre's religious head, suggesting design and display ideas, and then modifying modify material to coincide with that year's theme; and working with rigorous time and printing constraints, as well as a limited financial budget.
